BEAUTY CONTEST: A calf was the star as white camels took their turn to show off in the ongoing camel beauty pageant in Um Ruqaiba village, Eastern Province. Several thousands of camels of different breed and age are participating in the annual event, one of the Gulf region’s largest, with hundreds of people from various countries attending. Once a local desert custom, the pageant has been transformed into a competition. A camel’s beauty is assessed based on “the size of its head; whether its lips cover its teeth, the length of its neck and the roundness of its hump.” (SPA photos)
